 Race Day Quick Details
All athletes should park at Zephyr Cove Lodge  (free parking)
The bus and truck to Tahoe City or Incline will leave just before the start of the 72 mile Race.
If you need a ride to either stop be on the bus and have your bike in the truck before 6:55 AM

Pick up your number and wind shirt Friday between 4 PM and 8 PM
at the Expo at the Horizon Casino Resort or at 5:45 AM at Zephyr Cove Lodge race morning.

Windshirts are only given out at the Expo.

  Note:
 Each rider will be given a color sticker to put on the front and back of his/her helmet.
  This is to help you and the race committee  know which distance  you and your fellow riders are doing.

FAQ:

There will be 3 water bottle exchange areas:

  1. The top of Emerald Bay

  2. Tahoe City 35 mile start line

  3. Incline Village south end of Lake Shore Drive

Sports Ltd will provide a mechanic to follow the race
Drop off your excess clothing at one of the bottle exchange stations
Douglas County Search and Rescue will patrol the NV side from Crystal Bay to the Finish

 


 

  1. This event is designed to let you see how fast you can go around Lake Tahoe.

  2. You will receive handsome achievement awards for riding under 4 hours and 3:30.

  3. And a license plate frame for your time achievement for  under 5 hours.

  4. And you are also competing against the field for a small purse.

  5. Our current record is 3:01 held by Jeff Schalk of San Francisco.

  6. We have a $500 bounty to award the person who establishes a new record.

  7. Legend has it that Greg Lemond did it in 3:15 as a high school student while growing up in Reno. 

  8. We also offer a purse for the top five finishers men and women. 

  9. The first 9 miles is through about 25 stop lights with a police escort for the lead Peloton.

  10. Any one may ride but we do have a 6 hour time (7am to 1pm) limit for timing purposes.

  11. Those cyclists doing the event as part of the triathlon must adhere to the triathlon cycling rules.

  12. This is not on a closed course.

Finish first and set a new record for riding one lap around the lake and you will earn a bonus of $500 in addition to your first place prize money.
The current record was set by Jeff Schalk in 2004 with a time of:

72 Mile Race
  • The 72 Mile Bike race will start and finish in front of Zephyr Cove Lodge, which is 4 miles East of the Stateline in Nevada on the South Shore of  Lake Tahoe.

  • There will be a 6 hour time limit in 2007 for the 72 mile race. (7am to 1pm)

  • We have added an exhibition Tandem Bike division using the same guide time guide lines for finishing.

  • Jeff Schalk smashed the 72 mile record in 2004 of  American Tour de France winner Greg Lemond who legend has it, rode the 72 mile course in 3 hours and 15 minutes when he was a student in the Reno area.

  • All finishers will receive a cyclist finishers medal and event shirt.

  • There will be a special award for any  72 mile cyclists who finishes under 3:30 or  4 hours.

  • Late number pickup for the 72-mile bike will be at Zephyr Cove on Saturday from 6:00 - 6:50 am

  • Starts will be organized by riders anticipated speed with the fastest riders in the front.

  • The ride will be clockwise around the lake.

  • Police will escort and pace  the pack through the first 9 miles and 24  stop lights of the 72 Mile Race.

  • After the first 9 miles there is only 3 stop lights and a couple of stop signs remaining.

  • There are two stop lights in Kings Beach and a pedestrian light at the Stateline at Crystal Bay and a few stop signs along Lake Shore Blvd in Incline Village that must be obeyed if not controlled by traffic police.

  • The last 8 miles is down hill or flat and 4 lanes

  • Three water bottle exchange stations: Emerald Bay, Tahoe City, and Incline Village.

  • 72 Milers may drop off a water bottle in a box at the start line and it will be driven to Tahoe City and placed on a table for you to pick up. You should mark it in distinctive colors and markings so you can see it quickly.

  • Somewhere around Kings Beach the Bike Racers and the Triple Marathoners will pass each other in the opposite direction on the lake side of the highway.

  • Garwood's Grill & Pier will host an aid station 6 miles east of Tahoe City. (not confirmed for 2007 yet)

  • This is not a closed course.

  • Riders must obey all traffic rules.

  • Riders must use caution at all times

  • The elevation gain for the 72 Mile ride is 3900' gain. See elevation profile

 

The 35 Mile Race/Ride
  • The 35 mile Bike Race will start in Tahoe City.

  • Meet  on Commons Beach behind the Tahoe City Fire House.

  • Be there by 8:15 a.m.

  •  Late number pickup for the 35-mile bike will be behind Tahoe City fire house (start line) on Saturday from 7:15 - 8:30 am

  • The 35 milers will start after about the first 10 or so riders of the 72 Mile Race have passed  the 35 mile start line.

  • The 35 milers can anticipate starting at approximately 8:45 am. and must finish by 1pm which is about 4 hours and 15 minute limit

  • The 35 milers should drop off their bike at Commons Beach and drive your car with bike rack down to the finish at Zephyr Cove in the morning.

  • A bus will bring you right back to Tahoe City after the 72 mile Race starts at Zephyr Cove.

  • Bus will leave ZC at 7:15. 

  • There will not be a post event bus back to Tahoe City after the event.

  • There will be a special award for 35 and 20 miler riders who finish in certain time goals to be announced.

  • This is not a closed course.

  • Riders must obey all traffic rules.

  • Riders must use caution at all times

The 20 Mile Race/Ride
  • And the 20 mile ride in Incline Village. Start site to be announced about 9 a.m.

  • There will be a special award for 35 and 20 miler riders who finish in certain time goals to be announced.

  • This is not a closed course.

  • Riders must obey all traffic rules.

  • Riders must use caution at all times

Awards, Registration, Rental, Repair & Details

  •  

  • Bike only participants pick up your registration material and number at the Horizon Casino Resort Ballroom on Friday from 5-9pm

  • Triathletes pick up your race numbers at the Horizon Casino Resort ballroom on Wednesday from 2-6pm

  • You may register on line until Midnight Monday before or at the expo.

  • Mark Gandt owner of Tahoe Sports Ltd will donate gift certificates to bike racers at the Saturday awards ceremony and will provide emergency repairs at Emerald Bay, the start of the 35 miler and at Incline Village.

  • The race is a group start. Racers in front and Triathletes just back.

  • The 72, 35 & 20 Mile  Bike Races are also the second leg of the 3-Day Tahoe Triathlon for those entered in the 3-day Triathlon.

  • All riders will each receive a wind shirt at the Expo

  • Awards for Open & Masters men and women in each of the 72 & 35 & 20 mile races.

  • Awards will presented by the snack bar on the beach.

  • The two Bike divisions ( Triathletes and Racers)  will start together and after the first 9 miles Triathletes who use aero bars will not be allowed to draft. Bike racers will be allowed to draft. Triathletes will be able to use aero bars and bike racers will not. Triathletes with out aero bars will be able to draft.

  • Riders must obey all traffic rules.

  • Riders must use caution at all times
