Notes & stories of interest
We had 1 inch of snow on the Tuesday after the race. We probably will put in a delay start time option in case that ever happens on race day. Our schools here have a one hour delay start which is broadcast on all the radio stations. By doing a 2-4 hour delay, the 1-2 inches of snow would melt off and the temperature would be warmer. We have had 5 years of blue skies and 4 of those years were beach temperature weather at the finish after a cool morning starts.
Here's a story
emailed to me to share with you:
What about the guy that came to run the all down hill 10k, but ran
a 20k instead. He arrived too late for his party to take the bus from the
finish line to the start of the 10k, piled everyone into one SUV and drove
up the starting point. After he finished the race he intended to get a
ride back up to his
vehicle, drive
to pick everyone up and make a 1:30 flight back to Seattle out of Reno.
Unfortunately, the highway patrol wouldn't let them drive up with
people still running
down the hill. Fully intending to make the flight, he ran back up, encountering
a lot of "you're going the wrong way" hazing, and eased the truck back
down to the finish line. He never made that flight. Thanks for your story
Ed.
Did you hear about the lady who was entered in the Marathon Walk which started at 6:30. She decided to take the liberty of a head start and off she went. Three or four miles went by and she wondered why the only person who had passed her was a guy on roller blades with a marathon number on. Turns out when she took her early, early start, she forgot to turn left at Fanny Bridge and started walking to Truckee. So besides worrying her husband to death, she did her first Ultra. We estimate she did between 31-34 miles, and with a good time. She still wasn't the last one to cross the finish line.
And the guy on the roller blades with the marathon race bib must be still looking for the finish line at Donner Lake, 'cause we never saw him again.
And how about the race director who started the marathon and jumped into his car with a dead battery and had to commandeer a volunteers vehicle and use a Highway patrol red-light escort to get to the 10K and half marathon in time to start those races.....
And then there was the father and son team of Mark & Joe Groner who ran the St. George Marathon on Saturday, and then got to our Expo in time to pick up their race numbers, and finish our marathon in respectful times. They ran a 3:27 & 4:27 in Utah and but understandably, ran a bit slower on Sunday.
While collecting aid stations equipment today, several of our volunteers, commented how much fun they had, and appreciated your comments to them. There would not be a marathon anywhere, anyplace, without the volunteers who work for our thankyous and appreciation( and a measly t-shirt).
Sunday, as you know was spectacular. Today, Monday, we got our first Fall day, with gusts of wind blowing golden aspens and poplars leaves; and now this evening, showers with snow at the upper elevations...
The first showing of the Marathon on Fox Sports Bay Area was changed and will now be shown Thursday Set your VCR timer now and let your friends know. For those of you our of Northern Nevada or California, Call your local FOX station and ask them to show it in your area. It will also be shown in the Seattle & Portland area as well as Chicago.
And if your company would like to advertise on this show. 30 second commercials are $1,499,500 less than the Super Bowl commercials. ($500/30 seconds) Give me a call if interested. 1-530-544-7095
You may order your own copy of the marathon by emailing me below.
And importantly, any comments you have, good or bad, will be appreciated and shared with the race committee. Just email me below. Last year we think we made a couple of significant improvements from your comments. The new loop through Valhalla Historical Estates for one.
I would like to know what you thought of the Spectator Tour Bus around the lake. And about the Spectator Shuttle Trolley to Emerald Bay, that went to the 10K start and the 19 and 20 mile marks.
I'll be at the Marine Corp. Marathon in Washington in two weeks and I will run the New York Marathon November 5th. I'm looking for a January marathon to run. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks for being patient with the results..... and thanks for coming.
